Another popular justification seems to be, “The victim forgives him.” As a former police officer I can tell you unequivocally that the victim of a crime is often the person least capable of making that decision. They are frightened and humiliated. They just want it all to go away.

Twenty-years or so ago, the Domestic Violence laws were changed in most states requiring police officers to sign complaints instead of asking the abused spouse to do so. Why? Because a lot of them wouldn’t. They were so afraid or so used to the abuse, they didn’t think they could stop it. Jaycee Lee Dugard, the little girl kidnapped by Phillip Garrido, held and raped for eighteen years and forced to give birth to two children in a tent in a backyard (one when she was fourteen), APOLOGIZED to her family. After enduring half a lifetime of abuse, she is the one who feels guilty. Does that mean we let him go?

No. It is a just society’s DUTY to seek justice for them, ESPECIALLY when that victim is a child.

Hineyni, for me, is the most powerful word in Genesis. Abraham says it to God. It means, "Here I am," but it is not a geographical answer. It is not an answer to "Where are you?" It is the response to the challenge to acknowledge the truth of the present moment; to recognize what needs to be done, and to be prepared to do it. Abraham says "Hineyni" three times in the most terrible of circumstances.

Mindfulness is also "Here I am, not hiding," and it is also an expression of freedom. Even when experience is painful, especially when it is dire, mindfulness is freedom from extra anguish, from the extra pain of futile struggle. "This is what is true. These are the possibilities. I understand the necessary response." And sometimes, "There are no possibilities other than surrender. So I surrender."

When I was a child and heard that some people were able to go to the gas chamber saying, "I believe with perfect faith..." I didn't know what perfect faith was, but I knew that I wanted it. If it were possible, in such unspeakable situations, for speech - declarative, affirmative, fearless speech - to find its voice, I wanted to know "How?" I wanted to be able to do it.

I try to pray as if my prayers make a difference, but I don't believe that prayer saves us from terrible things happening. Terrible things do happen. I do believe that fully mindful prayer, undistracted presence, establishes the capacity of the mind to see clearly, and, when necessary, to surrender gracefully. Hineyni.

Hineyni is also the imperative to be fully present in moments of special joy, as well as in every day moments of the amazing blessing of simply being alive. My father said grace at dinnertime, and sometimes, probably in an attempt to be modern and funny, he would say, "Well, here we are again, God."

That was it. The whole grace. Maybe that is the whole grace. Here we are. Here I am. Hineyni.

Well, today is the day. I'm taking off out of SFO in a couple of hours, to arrive in Japan ~IN THE FUTURE~ (tomorrow, in other words). Except I think it will still be today here? Right, so, the end of Sailor Moon Stars anime is brutal. I don't really know if it's more brutal than the manga or not, given that my favorite character from that storyline is Sailor (Heavy? Are we still using Heavy?) Metal Papillon. And my favorite scene is Kakyuu's death. ...why did this turn into a paragraph about how I am weirdly morbid? ANYWAY. WE WERE TALKING ABOUT THE ANIME. It's basically the closest thing to torture porn that you can, in good conscience, air on a Saturday morning. It doesn't come quite as close to the manga in the "rock falls, everybody dies" department, but that just gives us more time to beat the absolute shit out of the Starlights. I like my Starlights beaten shitless. ...I'm being told this is weird.

...ahahaha and now for something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. Mister Rogers, okay. Mister Rogers is my childhood. I watched a lot of really classic TV as a kid - Sesame Street when it was still relatively Elmo-free, early Nicktoons - but I loved Mister Rogers most of all. He went to cool places and talked to cool people, and he was willing to try all sorts of things that white adult males might not necessarily want to be trying on television. He talked to kids, not at them. He wanted them to learn and build confidence, and he wrote all of those really endearing songs. If you need any more reason to love Mister Rogers, find the clip of him testifying to Congress about spending for public television on Youtube. Tell me you don't love him after that clip.

Somewhere in my mind, I have an AU about Gabriela Cobra, the fierce-ass drag queen, and her new friend Willow Beckett, a MTF-to-be. And if you think that's weird, you should talk to saintawesome sometime. Then there's Patrick, who, it has been canonically noted, roomed with Patrick during the TBP/IOH production days. Drummers In Love! Or something. Then there's Ray, who (despite the efforts of Frank's neckbeard) is really the only other bastion of testosterone going on in that band. Surely there's a lot of Manly Bonding to be had there. And of course there's ~~The Angriest Jew~~ Brian Schechter, who has a long history with Bob from his The Used days. All of these are excellent options to me!

I've been working on a character mock-up for awhile. Here is the result. It is NSFW by default, because it took me three hours to draw that penis correctly, thank you very much. His tattoos are "Hell or Glory" over the chest, and the kanji for hurt (傷) and comfort (慰) on his hipbones. I'm still not sure what his scar is about. edit: Forgot to mention that this was drawn entirely in Photoshop CS3; Flash is used only for the interface.

Now I want some opinions. Since the last few things I've posted haven't exactly been comment boffo around here, what would you be interested in seeing?
